Consumer Electronics Industry to Brief Media on New Alternatives to CEC TV Regulation Proposal

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® announced today an interactive webinar to be held Monday, November 9 to brief media and answer questions regarding the latest data on the California Energy Commission’s (CEC’s) proposed television regulations. The CEC is poised to adopt as early as November 18 new regulations restricting the ability of Californians to purchase certain models of televisions. Among CEA's findings:

  • The CEC Staff Report findings rely on flawed assumptions, erroneous calculations, and outdated technical data that do not support the proposed regulations.
  • Had the CEC’s proposed regulations been in place in 2001, the millions of plasma and LCD TVs currently in consumers’ homes and retailers’ shelves never could have come to market.
  • The Commission should adopt alternative measures that, in conjunction with industry’s voluntary efforts and existing market-oriented programs, will yield energy savings at least as great, if not greater, than would otherwise be achieved by regulating power consumption – but without the costs to consumers, business, and innovation.
